About

My name is Nick van Vugt – I’ve been working as a Community Manager for the past six years at a mobile game studio located in Toronto that publishes social games for Facebook, Android and iOS devices. I’ve spoken twice at GDC about Community Management (2016 – Dealing with Cheating: Five Years of Evolving Approaches; 2017 – Overcoming Community Negativity: An Exercise in Sanity) and hold the subject close. Understanding and working with a community through digital games can be tough, but it can be extremely rewarding.

I graduated with an M.A. in Communication and New Media at McMaster University back in 2011, with an honours B.A. in Multimedia and Theatre & Film. My Major Research Project, “The Art of Dreaming” as well as my research paper that accompanies the film can be found here.

Feel free to check out my fourth year thesis project: Extrasensory. You can find the majority of my past work uploaded on the website on my “Portfolio” page. Each video and image is linked directly to this site.

As for the casual part of this “About Me”, I can say that I’m a digital media and film enthusiast. I’m a cinephile with a preposterous number of DVDs and Blu-rays in my collection – I’d be happy to talk film! Although I don’t have a chance to play too many games myself, I do enjoy keeping up to date with what’s going on and watch more YouTube “Let’s Plays” than I care to admit. I also spend my free time photographing my various collections and putting together textiles for friends and family.
